Rehearsals for a Revolution Vol. I

Signs of the Times features banners, placards, picket signs, and flags from across the political and social spectrum, distilled into a typographic record of more than a century of protest. Drawn from archival photography, the book isolates words and symbols from demonstrations, marches, strikes, and rallies, stripping away people and context so that only the message and its form remain.

This first volume, the result of more than a year of research and editing, focuses on the English-speaking world.
Alongside documenting verifiable imagery and credits, the project also encountered doctored protest photos still in circulation — reminders of how easily meaning can be altered and history rewritten. By presenting these messages independent of their time and place, Signs of the Times asks us to consider democracy’s fragile record: what remains when we are left with only the words themselves?
